These functions calculate the inverse hyperbolic tangent of x<\/i>; that is the value whose hyperbolic tangent is x<\/i>.<\/p>\n

RETURN VALUE <\/a> <\/h2>\n

On success, these functions return the inverse hyperbolic tangent of x<\/i>.<\/p>\n

If x<\/i> is a NaN, a NaN is returned.<\/p>\n

If x<\/i> is +0 (\u22120), +0 (\u22120) is returned.<\/p>\n

If x<\/i> is +1 or \u22121, a pole error occurs, and the functions return HUGE_VAL<\/b>, HUGE_VALF<\/b>, or HUGE_VALL<\/b>, respectively, with the mathematically correct sign.<\/p>\n

If the absolute value of x<\/i> is greater than 1, a domain error occurs, and a NaN is returned.<\/p>\n

ERRORS <\/a> <\/h2>\n

See math_error<\/b>(7) for information on how to determine whether an error has occurred when calling these functions.<\/p>\n

The following errors can occur:
Domain error: x<\/i> less than \u22121 or greater than +1<\/p>\n

errno<\/i> is set to EDOM<\/b>. An invalid floating-point exception (FE_INVALID<\/b>) is raised.<\/p>\n

Pole error: x<\/i> is +1 or \u22121<\/p>\n

errno<\/i> is set to ERANGE<\/b> (but see BUGS). A divide-by-zero floating-point exception (FE_DIVBYZERO<\/b>) is raised.<\/p>\n

The variant returning double<\/i> also conforms to SVr4, 4.3BSD.<\/p>\n

BUGS <\/a> <\/h2>\n

In glibc 2.9 and earlier, when a pole error occurs, errno<\/i> as set to EDOM<\/b> instead of the POSIX-mandated ERANGE<\/b>. Since version 2.10, glibc does the right thing.<\/p>\n
