The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may not be implemented on Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>NAME <a name=\"NAME\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">head \u2014 copy the first part of files<\/p>\n<h2>SYNOPSIS <a name=\"SYNOPSIS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">head <b>[<\/b>-n <i>number<\/i><b>] [<\/b><i>file<\/i>&#8230;<b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>DESCRIPTION <a name=\"DESCRIPTION\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>head<\/i> utility shall copy its input files to the standard output, ending the output for each file at a designated point.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Copying shall end at the point in each input file indicated by the <b>\u2212n<\/b> <i>number<\/i> option. The option-argument <i>number<\/i> shall be counted in units of lines.<\/p>\n<h2>OPTIONS <a name=\"OPTIONS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>head<\/i> utility shall conform to the Base Definitions volume of POSIX.1-2017, <i>Section 12.2<\/i>, <i>Utility Syntax Guidelines<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The following option shall be supported:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"14%\">\n<p><b>\u2212n\u00a0<\/b><i>number<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p>The first <i>number<\/i> lines of each input file shall be copied to standard output. The application shall ensure that the <i>number<\/i> option-argument is a positive decimal integer.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">When a file contains less than <i>number<\/i> lines, it shall be copied to standard output in its entirety. This shall not be an error.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If no options are specified, <i>head<\/i> shall act as if <b>\u2212n 10<\/b> had been specified.<\/p>\n<h2>OPERANDS <a name=\"OPERANDS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The following operand shall be supported:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"6%\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em\"><i>file<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em\">A pathname of an input file. If no <i>file<\/i> operands are specified, the standard input shall be used.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<h2>STDIN <a name=\"STDIN\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The standard input shall be used if no <i>file<\/i> operands are specified, and shall be used if a <i>file<\/i> operand is <b>\u2019\u2212\u2019<\/b> and the implementation treats the <b>\u2019\u2212\u2019<\/b> as meaning standard input. Otherwise, the standard input shall not be used. See the INPUT FILES section.<\/p>\n<h2>INPUT FILES <a name=\"INPUT FILES\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Input files shall be text files, but the line length is not restricted to {LINE_MAX} bytes.<\/p>\n<h2>ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES <a name=\"ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The following environment variables shall affect the execution of <i>head<\/i>:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"12%\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em\"><i>LANG<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em\">Provide a default value for the internationalization variables that are unset or null. In the POSIX locale each byte is a valid single-byte character, and therefore this problem is avoided.<\/p>\n<h2>EXAMPLES <a name=\"EXAMPLES\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">To write the first ten lines of all files (except those with a leading period) in the directory:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:17%; margin-top: 1em\">head &#8212; *<\/p>\n<h2>RATIONALE <a name=\"RATIONALE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Although it is possible to simulate <i>head<\/i> with <i>sed<\/i> 10q for a single file, the standard developers decided that the popularity of <i>head<\/i> on historical BSD systems warranted its inclusion alongside <i>tail<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">POSIX.1-2008 version of <i>head<\/i> follows the Utility Syntax Guidelines. The <b>\u2212n<\/b> option was added to this new interface so that <i>head<\/i> and <i>tail<\/i> would be more logically related. Earlier versions of this standard allowed a <b>\u2212number<\/b> option.
