The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may not be implemented on Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>NAME <a name=\"NAME\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">read \u2014 read from standard input into shell variables<\/p>\n<h2>SYNOPSIS <a name=\"SYNOPSIS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">read <b>[<\/b>-r<b>]<\/b> <i>var<\/i>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>DESCRIPTION <a name=\"DESCRIPTION\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>read<\/i> utility shall read a single logical line from standard input into one or more shell variables.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">By default, unless the <b>\u2212r<\/b> option is specified, <backslash> shall act as an escape character. An unescaped <backslash> shall preserve the literal value of the following character, with the exception of a <newline>. If a <newline> follows the <backslash>, the <i>read<\/i> utility shall interpret this as line continuation. The <backslash> and <newline> shall be removed before splitting the input into fields. All other unescaped <backslash> characters shall be removed after splitting the input into fields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If standard input is a terminal device and the invoking shell is interactive, <i>read<\/i> shall prompt for a continuation line when it reads an input line ending with a <backslash> <newline>, unless the <b>\u2212r<\/b> option is specified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The terminating <newline> (if any) shall be removed from the input and the results shall be split into fields as in the shell for the results of parameter expansion (see <i>Section 2.6.5<\/i>, <i>Field Splitting<\/i>); the first field shall be assigned to the first variable <i>var<\/i>, the second field to the second variable <i>var<\/i>, and so on. If there are fewer fields than there are <i>var<\/i> operands, the remaining <i>var<\/i>s shall be set to empty strings. If it is called in a subshell or separate utility execution environment, such as one of the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:17%; margin-top: 1em\">(read foo) <br \/> nohup read &#8230; <br \/> find . -exec read &#8230; ;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">it shall not affect the shell variables in the caller\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n<h2>OPTIONS <a name=\"OPTIONS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>read<\/i> utility shall conform to the Base Definitions volume of POSIX.1-2017, <i>Section 12.2<\/i>, <i>Utility Syntax Guidelines<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The following option is supported:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em\"><b>\u2212r<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"12%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em\">Do not treat a <backslash> character in any special way. It was separated off into its own utility to take advantage of the richer description of functionality introduced by this volume of POSIX.1-2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Since <i>read<\/i> affects the current shell execution environment, it is generally provided as a shell regular built-in. If it is called in a subshell or separate utility execution environment, such as one of the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:17%; margin-top: 1em\">(read foo) <br \/> nohup read &#8230; <br \/> find . -exec read &#8230; ;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">it does not affect the shell variables in the environment of the caller.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Although the standard input is required to be a text file, and therefore will always end with a <newline> (unless it is an empty file), the processing of continuation lines when the <b>\u2212r<\/b> option is not used can result in the input not ending with a <newline>. This occurs if the last line of the input file ends with a <backslash> <newline>. It is for this reason that \u2018\u2018if any\u2019\u2019 is used in \u2018\u2018The terminating <newline> (if any) shall be removed from the input\u2019\u2019 in the description.
