The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may not be implemented on Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>NAME <a name=\"NAME\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">gencat \u2014 generate a formatted message catalog<\/p>\n<h2>SYNOPSIS <a name=\"SYNOPSIS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">gencat <i>catfile msgfile<\/i>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>DESCRIPTION <a name=\"DESCRIPTION\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>gencat<\/i> utility shall merge the message text source file <i>msgfile<\/i> into a formatted message catalog <i>catfile<\/i>. The file <i>catfile<\/i> shall be created if it does not already exist. If <i>catfile<\/i> does exist, its messages shall be included in the new <i>catfile<\/i>. If set and message numbers collide, the new message text defined in <i>msgfile<\/i> shall replace the old message text currently contained in <i>catfile<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>OPTIONS <a name=\"OPTIONS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">None.<\/p>\n<h2>OPERANDS <a name=\"OPERANDS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The following operands shall be supported:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"11%\">\n<p><i>catfile<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"4%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p>A pathname of the formatted message catalog. Note that the fields of a message text source line are separated by a single <blank> character. Any other <blank> characters are considered to be part of the subsequent field. <b><br \/> $set\u00a0<\/b><i>n\u00a0comment<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:26%;\">This line specifies the set identifier of the following messages until the next <b>$set<\/b> or end-of-file appears. The <i>n<\/i> denotes the set identifier, which is defined as a number in the range [1, {NL_SETMAX}] (see the <i><limits.h><\/i> header defined in the Base Definitions volume of POSIX.1-2017). The application shall ensure that set identifiers are presented in ascending order within a single source file, but need not be contiguous. Any string following the set identifier shall be treated as a comment. If no <b>$set<\/b> directive is specified in a message text source file, all messages shall be located in an implementation-defined default message set NL_SETD (see the <i><nl_types.h><\/i> header defined in the Base Definitions volume of POSIX.1-2017).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b>$delset\u00a0<\/b><i>n\u00a0comment<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:26%;\">This line deletes message set <i>n<\/i> from an existing message catalog. The <i>n<\/i> denotes the set number [1, {NL_SETMAX}]. Any string following the set number shall be treated as a comment.<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"14%\">\n<p><b>$\u00a0<\/b><i>comment<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p>A line beginning with <b>\u2019$\u2019<\/b> followed by a <blank> shall be treated as a comment.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><i>m\u00a0message-text<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:26%;\">The <i>m<\/i> denotes the message identifier, which is defined as a number in the range [1, {NL_MSGMAX}] (see the <i><limits.h><\/i> header). The <i>message-text<\/i> shall be stored in the message catalog with the set identifier specified by the last <b>$set<\/b> directive, and with message identifier <i>m<\/i>. If the <i>message-text<\/i> is empty, and a <blank> field separator is present, an empty string shall be stored in the message catalog. If a message source line has a message number, but neither a field separator nor <i>message-text<\/i>, the existing message with that number (if any) shall be deleted from the catalog. The application shall ensure that message identifiers are in ascending order within a single set, but need not be contiguous. The application shall ensure that the length of <i>message-text<\/i> is in the range [0, {NL_TEXTMAX}] (see the <i><limits.h><\/i> header).<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"12%\">\n<p><b>$quote\u00a0<\/b><i>n<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p>This line specifies an optional quote character <i>c<\/i>, which can be used to surround <i>message-text<\/i> so that trailing <space> characters or null (empty) messages are visible in a message source line. By default, or if an empty <b>$quote<\/b> directive is supplied, no quoting of <i>message-text<\/i> shall be recognized.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Empty lines in a message text source file shall be ignored. The effects of lines starting with any character other than those defined above are implementation-defined.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Text strings can contain the special characters and escape sequences defined in the following table:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 1em\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"grohtml-877801.png\" alt=\"Image grohtml-877801.png\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The escape sequence <b>&#8220;ddd&#8221;<\/b> consists of <backslash> followed by one, two, or three octal digits, which shall be taken to specify the value of the desired character. If the character following a <backslash> is not one of those specified, the <backslash> shall be ignored.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">A <backslash> followed by a <newline> is also used to continue a string on the following line.
