The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may not be implemented on Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>NAME <a name=\"NAME\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">pwd \u2014 return working directory name<\/p>\n<h2>SYNOPSIS <a name=\"SYNOPSIS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">pwd <b>[<\/b>-L|-P<b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>DESCRIPTION <a name=\"DESCRIPTION\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>pwd<\/i> utility shall write to standard output an absolute pathname of the current working directory, which does not contain the filenames dot or dot-dot.<\/p>\n<h2>OPTIONS <a name=\"OPTIONS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>pwd<\/i> utility shall conform to the Base Definitions volume of POSIX.1-2017, <i>Section 12.2<\/i>, <i>Utility Syntax Guidelines<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The following options shall be supported by the implementation:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\">\n<p><b>\u2212L<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"12%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p>If the <i>PWD<\/i> environment variable contains an absolute pathname of the current directory and the pathname does not contain any components that are dot or dot-dot, <i>pwd<\/i> shall write this pathname to standard output, except that if the <i>PWD<\/i> environment variable is longer than {PATH_MAX} bytes including the terminating null, it is unspecified whether <i>pwd<\/i> writes this pathname to standard output or behaves as if the <b>\u2212P<\/b> option had been specified. Otherwise, the <b>\u2212L<\/b> option shall behave as the <b>\u2212P<\/b> option.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\">\n<p><b>\u2212P<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"12%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"74%\">\n<p>The pathname written to standard output shall not contain any components that refer to files of type symbolic link. If there are multiple pathnames that the <i>pwd<\/i> utility could write to standard output, one beginning with a single <slash> character and one or more beginning with two <slash> characters, then it shall write the pathname beginning with a single <slash> character. The pathname shall not contain any unnecessary <slash> characters after the leading one or two <slash> characters.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If both <b>\u2212L<\/b> and <b>\u2212P<\/b> are specified, the last one shall apply. Therefore, in order to return to that directory it may be necessary to break the pathname into sections shorter than {PATH_MAX} and call <i>cd<\/i> on each section in turn (the first section being an absolute pathname and subsequent sections being relative pathnames).<\/p>\n<h2>EXAMPLES <a name=\"EXAMPLES\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">None.<\/p>\n<h2>RATIONALE <a name=\"RATIONALE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Some implementations have historically provided <i>pwd<\/i> as a shell special built-in command.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">In most utilities, if an error occurs, partial output may be written to standard output. This does not happen in historical implementations of <i>pwd<\/i>. Because <i>pwd<\/i> is frequently used in historical shell scripts without checking the exit status, it is important that the historical behavior is required here; therefore, the CONSEQUENCES OF ERRORS section specifically disallows any partial output being written to standard output.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">An earlier version of this standard stated that the <i>PWD<\/i> environment variable was affected when the <b>\u2212P<\/b> option was in effect.
