The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may not be implemented on Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>NAME <a name=\"NAME\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">getitimer, setitimer \u2014 get and set value of interval timer<\/p>\n<h2>SYNOPSIS <a name=\"SYNOPSIS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">#include <sys\/time.h><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">int getitimer(int <i>which<\/i>, struct itimerval *<i>value<\/i>); <br \/> int setitimer(int <i>which<\/i>, const struct itimerval *restrict <i>value<\/i>, <br \/> struct itimerval *restrict <i>ovalue<\/i>);<\/p>\n<h2>DESCRIPTION <a name=\"DESCRIPTION\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>getitimer<\/i>() function shall store the current value of the timer specified by <i>which<\/i> into the structure pointed to by <i>value<\/i>. The <i>setitimer<\/i>() function shall set the timer specified by <i>which<\/i> to the value specified in the structure pointed to by <i>value<\/i>, and if <i>ovalue<\/i> is not a null pointer, store the previous value of the timer in the structure pointed to by <i>ovalue<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">A timer value is defined by the <b>itimerval<\/b> structure, specified in <i><sys\/time.h><\/i>. If <i>it_value<\/i> is non-zero, it shall indicate the time to the next timer expiration. If <i>it_interval<\/i> is non-zero, it shall specify a value to be used in reloading <i>it_value<\/i> when the timer expires. Setting <i>it_value<\/i> to 0 shall disable a timer, regardless of the value of <i>it_interval<\/i>. Setting <i>it_interval<\/i> to 0 shall disable a timer after its next expiration (assuming <i>it_value<\/i> is non-zero).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Implementations may place limitations on the granularity of timer values. For each interval timer, if the requested timer value requires a finer granularity than the implementation supports, the actual timer value shall be rounded up to the next supported value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">An XSI-conforming implementation provides each process with at least three interval timers, which are indicated by the <i>which<\/i> argument:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"17%\">\n<p>ITIMER_PROF<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"4%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"68%\">\n<p>Decrements both in process virtual time and when the system is running on behalf of the process. It is designed to be used by interpreters in statistically profiling the execution of interpreted programs. Each time the ITIMER_PROF timer expires, the SIGPROF signal is delivered.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"17%\">\n<p>ITIMER_REAL<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"4%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"68%\">\n<p>Decrements in real time. A SIGALRM signal is delivered when this timer expires.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\">ITIMER_VIRTUAL<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:32%;\">Decrements in process virtual time. It runs only when the process is executing. A SIGVTALRM signal is delivered when it expires.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The interaction between <i>setitimer<\/i>() and <i>alarm<\/i>() or <i>sleep<\/i>() is unspecified.<\/p>\n<h2>RETURN VALUE <a name=\"RETURN VALUE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Upon successful completion, <i>getitimer<\/i>() or <i>setitimer<\/i>() shall return 0; otherwise, \u22121 shall be returned and <i>errno<\/i> set to indicate the error.<\/p>\n<h2>ERRORS <a name=\"ERRORS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>setitimer<\/i>() function shall fail if:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\">\n<p><b>EINVAL<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"78%\">\n<p>The <i>value<\/i> argument is not in canonical form.
