Any conflict between the requirements described here and the ISO\u00a0C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1-2017 defers to the ISO\u00a0C standard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>ps<\/i> is not a null pointer, the <i>mbsinit<\/i>() function shall determine whether the object pointed to by <i>ps<\/i> describes an initial conversion state.<\/p>\n<h2>RETURN VALUE <a name=\"RETURN VALUE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>mbsinit<\/i>() function shall return non-zero if <i>ps<\/i> is a null pointer, or if the pointed-to object describes an initial conversion state; otherwise, it shall return zero.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If an <b>mbstate_t<\/b> object is altered by any of the functions described as \u2018\u2018restartable\u2019\u2019, and is then used with a different character sequence, or in the other conversion direction, or with a different <i>LC_CTYPE<\/i> category setting than on earlier function calls, the behavior is undefined.<\/p>\n<h2>ERRORS <a name=\"ERRORS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">No errors are defined.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\"><i>The following sections are informative.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2>EXAMPLES <a name=\"EXAMPLES\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">None.<\/p>\n<h2>APPLICATION USAGE <a name=\"APPLICATION USAGE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <b>mbstate_t<\/b> object is used to describe the current conversion state from a particular character sequence to a wide-character sequence (or <i>vice versa<\/i>) under the rules of a particular setting of the <i>LC_CTYPE<\/i> category of the current locale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The initial conversion state corresponds, for a conversion in either direction, to the beginning of a new character sequence in the initial shift state. A zero valued <b>mbstate_t<\/b> object is at least one way to describe an initial conversion state.
