NAME <\/a> <\/h2>\n

putenv \u2014 change or add a value to an environment<\/p>\n

SYNOPSIS <\/a> <\/h2>\n

int putenv(char *string<\/i>);<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION <\/a> <\/h2>\n

The putenv<\/i>() function shall use the string<\/i> argument to set environment variable values. The string<\/i> argument should point to a string of the form “name<\/i>=value<\/i>“. The putenv<\/i>() function shall make the value of the environment variable name<\/i> equal to value<\/i> by altering an existing variable or creating a new one. In either case, the string pointed to by string<\/i> shall become part of the environment, so altering the string shall change the environment.<\/p>\n

The putenv<\/i>() function need not be thread-safe.<\/p>\n

RETURN VALUE <\/a> <\/h2>\n

Upon successful completion, putenv<\/i>() shall return 0; otherwise, it shall return a non-zero value and set errno<\/i> to indicate the error.<\/p>\n

Changing the Value of an Environment Variable<\/b><\/i>

APPLICATION USAGE <\/a> <\/h2>\n

The putenv<\/i>() function manipulates the environment pointed to by environ<\/i>, and can be used in conjunction with getenv<\/i>().<\/p>\n

See exec<\/i>() for restrictions on changing the environment in multi-threaded applications.<\/p>\n

This routine may use malloc<\/i>() to enlarge the environment.<\/p>\n

A potential error is to call putenv<\/i>() with an automatic variable as the argument, then return from the calling function while string<\/i> is still part of the environment.<\/p>\n

Although the space used by string<\/i> is no longer used once a new string which defines name<\/i> is passed to putenv<\/i>(), if any thread in the application has used getenv<\/i>() to retrieve a pointer to this variable, it should not be freed by calling free<\/i>(). If the changed environment variable is one known by the system (such as the locale environment variables) the application should never free the buffer used by earlier calls to putenv<\/i>() for the same variable.<\/p>\n

The setenv<\/i>() function is preferred over this function. One reason is that putenv<\/i>() is optional and therefore less portable. Another is that using putenv<\/i>() can slow down environment searches, as explained in the RATIONALE section for getenv<\/i>().<\/p>\n
