The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may not be implemented on Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>NAME <a name=\"NAME\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">atan2, atan2f, atan2l \u2014 arc tangent functions<\/p>\n<h2>SYNOPSIS <a name=\"SYNOPSIS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">#include <math.h><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">double atan2(double <i>y<\/i>, double <i>x<\/i>); <br \/> float atan2f(float <i>y<\/i>, float <i>x<\/i>); <br \/> long double atan2l(long double <i>y<\/i>, long double <i>x<\/i>);<\/p>\n<h2>DESCRIPTION <a name=\"DESCRIPTION\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The functionality described on this reference page is aligned with the ISO\u00a0C standard. Any conflict between the requirements described here and the ISO\u00a0C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1-2017 defers to the ISO\u00a0C standard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">These functions shall compute the principal value of the arc tangent of <i>y<\/i>\/<i>x<\/i>, using the signs of both arguments to determine the quadrant of the return value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">An application wishing to check for error situations should set <i>errno<\/i> to zero and call <i>feclearexcept<\/i>(FE_ALL_EXCEPT) before calling these functions. On return, if <i>errno<\/i> is non-zero or <i>fetestexcept<\/i>(FE_INVALID | FE_DIVBYZERO | FE_OVERFLOW | FE_UNDERFLOW) is non-zero, an error has occurred.<\/p>\n<h2>RETURN VALUE <a name=\"RETURN VALUE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Upon successful completion, these functions shall return the arc tangent of <i>y<\/i>\/<i>x<\/i> in the range [\u2212\u03c0,\u03c0] radians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is \u00b10 and <i>x<\/i> is < 0, \u00b1\u03c0 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is \u00b10 and <i>x<\/i> is > 0, \u00b10 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is < 0 and <i>x<\/i> is \u00b10, \u2212\u03c0\/2 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is > 0 and <i>x<\/i> is \u00b10, \u03c0\/2 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>x<\/i> is 0, a pole error shall not occur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If either <i>x<\/i> or <i>y<\/i> is NaN, a NaN shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If the correct value would cause underflow, a range error may occur, and <i>atan<\/i>(), <i>atan2f<\/i>(), and <i>atan2l<\/i>() shall return an implementation-defined value no greater in magnitude than DBL_MIN, FLT_MIN, and LDBL_MIN, respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If the IEC 60559 Floating-Point option is supported, <i>y<\/i>\/<i>x<\/i> should be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is \u00b10 and <i>x<\/i> is \u22120, \u00b1\u03c0 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is \u00b10 and <i>x<\/i> is +0, \u00b10 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">For finite values of \u00b1<i>y<\/i> > 0, if <i>x<\/i> is \u2212Inf, \u00b1\u03c0 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">For finite values of \u00b1<i>y<\/i> > 0, if <i>x<\/i> is +Inf, \u00b10 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">For finite values of <i>x<\/i>, if <i>y<\/i> is \u00b1Inf, \u00b1\u03c0\/2 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is \u00b1Inf and <i>x<\/i> is \u2212Inf, \u00b13\u03c0\/4 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If <i>y<\/i> is \u00b1Inf and <i>x<\/i> is +Inf, \u00b1\u03c0\/4 shall be returned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If both arguments are 0, a domain error shall not occur.<\/p>\n<h2>ERRORS <a name=\"ERRORS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">These functions may fail if:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"17%\">\n<p>Range\u00a0Error<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"34%\">\n<p>The result underflows.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"37%\"> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:29%; margin-top: 1em\">If the integer expression (<i>math_errhandling<\/i> &#038; MATH_ERRNO) is non-zero, then <i>errno<\/i> shall be set to <b>[ERANGE]<\/b>. There are other ways to compute the angle <i>theta<\/i>, using <i>asin<\/i>() <i>acos<\/i>(), or <i>atan<\/i>().
