The functionality described on this reference page is aligned with the ISO\u00a0C standard. Any conflict between the requirements described here and the ISO\u00a0C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1-2017 defers to the ISO\u00a0C standard.<\/p>\n

The perror<\/i>() function shall map the error number accessed through the symbol errno<\/i> to a language-dependent error message, which shall be written to the standard error stream as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contents of the error message strings shall be the same as those returned by strerror<\/i>() with argument errno<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The perror<\/i>() function shall mark for update the last data modification and last file status change timestamps of the file associated with the standard error stream at some time between its successful completion and exit<\/i>(), abort<\/i>(), or the completion of fflush<\/i>() or fclose<\/i>() on stderr<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The perror<\/i>() function shall not change the orientation of the standard error stream.<\/p>\n

On error, perror<\/i>() shall set the error indicator for the stream to which stderr<\/i> points, and shall set errno<\/i> to indicate the error.<\/p>\n

Since no value is returned, an application wishing to check for error situations should call clearerr<\/i>(stderr<\/i>) before calling perror<\/i>(), then if ferror<\/i>(stderr<\/i>) returns non-zero, the value of errno<\/i> indicates which error occurred.<\/p>\n

The following example replaces bufptr<\/i> with a buffer that is the necessary size. If an error occurs, the perror<\/i>() function prints a message and the program exits.<\/p>\n
