Any conflict between the requirements described here and the ISO\u00a0C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1-2017 defers to the ISO\u00a0C standard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>perror<\/i>() function shall map the error number accessed through the symbol <i>errno<\/i> to a language-dependent error message, which shall be written to the standard error stream as follows:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"12%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\">\n<p>*<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"83%\">\n<p>First (if <i>s<\/i> is not a null pointer and the character pointed to by <i>s<\/i> is not the null byte), the string pointed to by <i>s<\/i> followed by a <colon> and a <space>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"12%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\">\n<p>*<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"83%\">\n<p>Then an error message string followed by a <newline>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The contents of the error message strings shall be the same as those returned by <i>strerror<\/i>() with argument <i>errno<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>perror<\/i>() function shall mark for update the last data modification and last file status change timestamps of the file associated with the standard error stream at some time between its successful completion and <i>exit<\/i>(), <i>abort<\/i>(), or the completion of <i>fflush<\/i>() or <i>fclose<\/i>() on <i>stderr<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>perror<\/i>() function shall not change the orientation of the standard error stream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">On error, <i>perror<\/i>() shall set the error indicator for the stream to which <i>stderr<\/i> points, and shall set <i>errno<\/i> to indicate the error.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Since no value is returned, an application wishing to check for error situations should call <i>clearerr<\/i>(<i>stderr<\/i>) before calling <i>perror<\/i>(), then if <i>ferror<\/i>(<i>stderr<\/i>) returns non-zero, the value of <i>errno<\/i> indicates which error occurred.<\/p>\n<h2>RETURN VALUE <a name=\"RETURN VALUE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>perror<\/i>() function shall not return a value.<\/p>\n<h2>ERRORS <a name=\"ERRORS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Refer to <i>fputc<\/i>().<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\"><i>The following sections are informative.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2>EXAMPLES <a name=\"EXAMPLES\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\"><i><b>Printing an Error Message for a Function<\/b><\/i> <br \/> The following example replaces <i>bufptr<\/i> with a buffer that is the necessary size.
