dirfd \u2014 extract the file descriptor used by a DIR stream<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION <\/a> <\/h2>\n

The dirfd<\/i>() function shall return a file descriptor referring to the same directory as the dirp<\/i> argument. This file descriptor shall be closed by a call to closedir<\/i>(). If any attempt is made to close the file descriptor, or to modify the state of the associated description, other than by means of closedir<\/i>(), readdir<\/i>(), readdir_r<\/i>(), rewinddir<\/i>(), or seekdir<\/i>(), the behavior is undefined.<\/p>\n

RETURN VALUE <\/a> <\/h2>\n

Upon successful completion, the dirfd<\/i>() function shall return an integer which contains a file descriptor for the stream pointed to by dirp<\/i>. Otherwise, it shall return \u22121 and shall set errno<\/i> to indicate the error.<\/p>\n

The dirfd<\/i>() function is intended to be a mechanism by which an application may obtain a file descriptor to use for the fchdir<\/i>() function.<\/p>\n

RATIONALE <\/a> <\/h2>\n

This interface was introduced because the Base Definitions volume of POSIX.1-2017 does not make public the DIR<\/b> data structure. Applications tend to use the fchdir<\/i>() function on the file descriptor returned by this interface, and this has proven useful for security reasons; in particular, it is a better technique than others where directory names might change.<\/p>\n

The description uses the term \u2018\u2018a file descriptor\u2019\u2019 rather than \u2018\u2018the file descriptor\u2019\u2019. The implication intended is that an implementation that does not use an fd<\/i> for opendir<\/i>() could still open<\/i>() the directory to implement the dirfd<\/i>() function. Such a descriptor must be closed later during a call to closedir<\/i>().<\/p>\n

If it is necessary to allocate an fd<\/i> to be returned by dirfd<\/i>(), it should be done at the time of a call to opendir<\/i>().<\/p>\n
