The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may not be implemented on Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>NAME <a name=\"NAME\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">fgetc \u2014 get a byte from a stream<\/p>\n<h2>SYNOPSIS <a name=\"SYNOPSIS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">#include <stdio.h><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">int fgetc(FILE *<i>stream<\/i>);<\/p>\n<h2>DESCRIPTION <a name=\"DESCRIPTION\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The functionality described on this reference page is aligned with the ISO\u00a0C standard. Any conflict between the requirements described here and the ISO\u00a0C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1-2017 defers to the ISO\u00a0C standard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If the end-of-file indicator for the input stream pointed to by <i>stream<\/i> is not set and a next byte is present, the <i>fgetc<\/i>() function shall obtain the next byte as an <b>unsigned char<\/b> converted to an <b>int<\/b>, from the input stream pointed to by <i>stream<\/i>, and advance the associated file position indicator for the stream (if defined). Since <i>fgetc<\/i>() operates on bytes, reading a character consisting of multiple bytes (or \u2018\u2018a multi-byte character\u2019\u2019) may require multiple calls to <i>fgetc<\/i>().<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>fgetc<\/i>() function may mark the last data access timestamp of the file associated with <i>stream<\/i> for update. The last data access timestamp shall be marked for update by the first successful execution of <i>fgetc<\/i>(), <i>fgets<\/i>(), <i>fread<\/i>(), <i>fscanf<\/i>(), <i>getc<\/i>(), <i>getchar<\/i>(), <i>getdelim<\/i>(), <i>getline<\/i>(), <i>gets<\/i>(), or <i>scanf<\/i>() using <i>stream<\/i> that returns data not supplied by a prior call to <i>ungetc<\/i>().<\/p>\n<h2>RETURN VALUE <a name=\"RETURN VALUE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Upon successful completion, <i>fgetc<\/i>() shall return the next byte from the input stream pointed to by <i>stream<\/i>. If the end-of-file indicator for the stream is set, or if the stream is at end-of-file, the end-of-file indicator for the stream shall be set and <i>fgetc<\/i>() shall return EOF. If a read error occurs, the error indicator for the stream shall be set, <i>fgetc<\/i>() shall return EOF, and shall set <i>errno<\/i> to indicate the error.<\/p>\n<h2>ERRORS <a name=\"ERRORS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>fgetc<\/i>() function shall fail if data needs to be read and:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\">\n<p><b>EAGAIN<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"78%\">\n<p>The O_NONBLOCK flag is set for the file descriptor underlying <i>stream<\/i> and the thread would be delayed in the <i>fgetc<\/i>() operation.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\">\n<p><b>EBADF<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"78%\">\n<p>The file descriptor underlying <i>stream<\/i> is not a valid file descriptor open for reading.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\">\n<p><b>EINTR<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"78%\">\n<p>The read operation was terminated due to the receipt of a signal, and no data was transferred.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\">\n<p><b>EIO<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"78%\">\n<p>A physical I\/O error has occurred, or the process is in a background process group attempting to read from its controlling terminal, and either the calling thread is blocking SIGTTIN or the process is ignoring SIGTTIN or the process group of the process is orphaned.
