Any conflict between the requirements described here and the ISO\u00a0C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1-2017 defers to the ISO\u00a0C standard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The <i>stpncpy<\/i>() and <i>strncpy<\/i>() functions shall copy not more than <i>n<\/i> bytes (bytes that follow a NUL character are not copied) from the array pointed to by <i>s2<\/i> to the array pointed to by <i>s1<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If the array pointed to by <i>s2<\/i> is a string that is shorter than <i>n<\/i> bytes, NUL characters shall be appended to the copy in the array pointed to by <i>s1<\/i>, until <i>n<\/i> bytes in all are written.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If copying takes place between objects that overlap, the behavior is undefined.<\/p>\n<h2>RETURN VALUE <a name=\"RETURN VALUE\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">If a NUL character is written to the destination, the <i>stpncpy<\/i>() function shall return the address of the first such NUL character.
