NAME <\/a> <\/h2>\n

sem_init \u2014 initialize an unnamed semaphore<\/p>\n

int sem_init(sem_t *sem<\/i>, int pshared<\/i>, unsigned value<\/i>);<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION <\/a> <\/h2>\n

The sem_init<\/i>() function shall initialize the unnamed semaphore referred to by sem<\/i>. The value of the initialized semaphore shall be value<\/i>. Following a successful call to sem_init<\/i>(), the semaphore may be used in subsequent calls to sem_wait<\/i>(), sem_timedwait<\/i>(), sem_trywait<\/i>(), sem_post<\/i>(), and sem_destroy<\/i>(). This semaphore shall remain usable until the semaphore is destroyed.<\/p>\n

If the pshared<\/i> argument has a non-zero value, then the semaphore is shared between processes; in this case, any process that can access the semaphore sem<\/i> can use sem<\/i> for performing sem_wait<\/i>(), sem_timedwait<\/i>(), sem_trywait<\/i>(), sem_post<\/i>(), and sem_destroy<\/i>() operations.<\/p>\n

If the pshared<\/i> argument is zero, then the semaphore is shared between threads of the process; any thread in this process can use sem<\/i> for performing sem_wait<\/i>(), sem_timedwait<\/i>(), sem_trywait<\/i>(), sem_post<\/i>(), and sem_destroy<\/i>() operations.<\/p>\n

Attempting to initialize an already initialized semaphore results in undefined behavior.<\/p>\n

RETURN VALUE <\/a> <\/h2>\n

Upon successful completion, the sem_init<\/i>() function shall initialize the semaphore in sem<\/i> and return 0. Otherwise, it shall return \u22121 and set errno<\/i> to indicate the error.<\/p>\n
