The caches contain information relevant to the current state of the manual page system and the information stored within them is used by the man\u2212db utilities to enhance their speed and functionality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">When creating or updating an <b>index<\/b>, <b>mandb<\/b> will warn of bad ROFF .so requests, bogus manual page filenames and manual pages from which the <b>whatis<\/b> cannot be parsed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Supplying <b>mandb<\/b> with an optional colon\u2212delimited path will override the internal system manual page hierarchy search path, determined from information found within the man\u2212db configuration file.<\/p>\n<h2>DATABASE CACHES <a name=\"DATABASE CACHES\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\"><b>mandb<\/b> can be compiled with support for any one of the following database types.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 1em\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"grohtml-903951.png\" alt=\"Image grohtml-903951.png\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">Those database types that support asynchronous updates provide enhanced speed at the cost of possible corruption in the event of unusual termination. If a database does not exist, it will create it. This option forces <b>mandb<\/b> to delete previous databases and re\u2212create them from scratch, and implies <b>\u2212\u2212no\u2212purge.<\/b> This may be necessary if a database becomes corrupt or if a new database storage scheme is introduced in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b>\u2212u<\/b>, <b>\u2212\u2212user-db<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Create user databases only, even with write permissions necessary to create system databases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b>\u2212t<\/b>, <b>\u2212\u2212test<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Perform correctness checks on manual pages in the hierarchy search path. With this option, <b>mandb<\/b> will not alter existing databases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b>\u2212f<\/b>, <b>\u2212\u2212filename<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Update only the entries for the given filename. This option is not for general use; it is used internally by <b>man<\/b> when it has been compiled with the <b>MAN_DB_UPDATES<\/b> option and finds that a page is out of date. This is usually due to a poorly written manual page, but if many such messages are emitted it is likely that the system contains non\u2212standard manual pages which are incompatible with the man\u2212db whatis parser. See the <b>WHATIS PARSING<\/b> section in <b>lexgrog<\/b>(1) for more information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b><filename>: is a dangling symlink<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\"><filename> does not exist but is referenced by a symbolic link. Further diagnostics are usually emitted to identify the <filename> of the offending link.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b><filename>: bad symlink or ROFF \u2018.so\u2019 request<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\"><filename> is either a symbolic link to, or contains a ROFF include request to, a non existent file.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b><filename>: genegeerde onzin bestandsnaam<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\"><filename> kan een al dan niet geldige man\u2212pagina zijn, maar de naam is ongeldig.
