shmctl \u2014 XSI shared memory control operations<\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION <\/a> <\/h2>\n

The shmctl<\/i>() function operates on XSI shared memory (see the Base Definitions volume of POSIX.1-2017, Section 3.346<\/i>, Shared Memory Object<\/i>). It is unspecified whether this function interoperates with the realtime interprocess communication facilities defined in Section 2.8<\/i>, Realtime<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The shmctl<\/i>() function provides a variety of shared memory control operations as specified by cmd<\/i>. The following values for cmd<\/i> are available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IPC_STAT<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

<\/td>\n\n

Place the current value of each member of the shmid_ds<\/b> data structure associated with shmid<\/i> into the structure pointed to by buf<\/i>. The contents of the structure are defined in <\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

IPC_SET<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

<\/td>\n\n

Set the value of the following members of the shmid_ds<\/b> data structure associated with shmid<\/i> to the corresponding value found in the structure pointed to by buf<\/i>:<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

shm_perm.uid
shm_perm.gid
shm_perm.mode Low-order nine bits.<\/p>\n

Also, the shm_ctime<\/i> timestamp shall be set to the current time, as described in Section 2.7.1<\/i>, IPC General Description<\/i>.<\/p>\n

IPC_SET can only be executed by a process that has an effective user ID equal to either that of a process with appropriate privileges or to the value of shm_perm.cuid<\/i> or shm_perm.uid<\/i> in the shmid_ds<\/b> data structure associated with shmid<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n

IPC_RMID<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

<\/td>\n\n

Remove the shared memory identifier specified by shmid<\/i> from the system and destroy the shared memory segment and shmid_ds<\/b> data structure associated with it. IPC_RMID can only be executed by a process that has an effective user ID equal to either that of a process with appropriate privileges or to the value of shm_perm.cuid<\/i> or shm_perm.uid<\/i> in the shmid_ds<\/b> data structure associated with shmid<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

RETURN VALUE <\/a> <\/h2>\n

Upon successful completion, shmctl<\/i>() shall return 0; otherwise, it shall return \u22121 and set errno<\/i> to indicate the error.<\/p>\n

ERRORS <\/a> <\/h2>\n

The shmctl<\/i>() function shall fail if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The argument cmd<\/i> is equal to IPC_STAT and the calling process does not have read permission; see Section 2.7<\/i>, XSI Interprocess Communication<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The value of shmid<\/i> is not a valid shared memory identifier, or the value of cmd<\/i> is not a valid command.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The argument cmd<\/i> is equal to IPC_RMID or IPC_SET and the effective user ID of the calling process is not equal to that of a process with appropriate privileges and it is not equal to the value of shm_perm.cuid<\/i> or shm_perm.uid<\/i> in the data structure associated with shmid<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

The shmctl<\/i>() function may fail if:

The cmd<\/i> argument is IPC_STAT and the gid<\/i> or uid<\/i> value is too large to be stored in the structure pointed to by the buf<\/i> argument.<\/p>\n

The POSIX Realtime Extension defines alternative interfaces for interprocess communication. Application developers who need to use IPC should design their applications so that modules using the IPC routines described in Section 2.7<\/i>, XSI Interprocess Communication<\/i> can be easily modified to use the alternative interfaces.<\/p>\n
