Each line represents a network and has the following structure:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%; margin-top: 1em\"><i>name number aliases &#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">where the fields are delimited by spaces or tabs. Empty lines are ignored. The hash character (<b>#<\/b>) indicates the start of a comment: this character, and the remaining characters up to the end of the current line, are ignored by library functions that process the file.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The field descriptions are:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" rules=\"none\" frame=\"void\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\">\n<p><i>name<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"78%\">\n<p>The symbolic name for the network. Network names can contain any printable characters except white-space characters or the comment character.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\" align=\"left\">\n<td width=\"11%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"9%\">\n<p><i>number<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"2%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"78%\">\n<p>The official number for this network in numbers-and-dots notation (see <b>inet<\/b>(3)). The trailing &#8220;.0&#8221; (for the host component of the network address) may be omitted.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><i>aliases<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Optional aliases for the network.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">This file is read by the <b>route<\/b>(8) and <b>netstat<\/b>(8) utilities.
