The <i>device<\/i> argument is either the device name (e.g., <i>\/dev\/hda1<\/i>, <i>\/dev\/sdb2<\/i>), or a regular file that shall contain the filesystem. The <i>size<\/i> argument is the number of blocks to be used for the filesystem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">The exit status returned by <b>mkfs<\/b> is 0 on success and 1 on failure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">In actuality, <b>mkfs<\/b> is simply a front-end for the various filesystem builders (<b>mkfs.<\/b><i>fstype<\/i>) available under Linux. The filesystem-specific builder is searched for via your PATH environment setting only. Please see the filesystem-specific builder manual pages for further details.<\/p>\n<h2>OPTIONS <a name=\"OPTIONS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\"><b>\u2212t<\/b>, <b>\u2212\u2212type<\/b> <i>type<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Specify the <i>type<\/i> of filesystem to be built. If not specified, the default filesystem type (currently ext2) is used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><i>fs-options<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Filesystem-specific options to be passed to the real filesystem builder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b>\u2212V<\/b>, <b>\u2212\u2212verbose<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Produce verbose output, including all filesystem-specific commands that are executed. Specifying this option more than once inhibits execution of any filesystem-specific commands. This is really only useful for testing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b>\u2212V<\/b>, <b>\u2212\u2212version<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Display version information and exit. (Option <b>\u2212V<\/b> will display version information only when it is the only parameter, otherwise it will work as <b>\u2212\u2212verbose<\/b>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%;\"><b>\u2212h<\/b>, <b>\u2212\u2212help<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:22%;\">Display help text and exit.<\/p>\n<h2>BUGS <a name=\"BUGS\"><\/a> <\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left:11%; margin-top: 1em\">All generic options must precede and not be combined with filesystem-specific options.
